SSMS teams win basketball divisions at NL

    PARIS — The Sulphur Springs Middle School seventh and eighth grade girls team won their divisions at the recent North Lamar basketball tournament.
    The eighth grade Lady Cats "Blue" team won Saturday at the buzzer, with a rebound shot by Destinee Weeks, 34-32 over Chapel Hill.

    In game one, they defeated Cooper 35-13. Scorers included: Tori Moore, 10; Daieyshia Pruitt and Tatiana King, 7 each; Destinee Weeks, 4; Sharitta Hill, 3; Jaye Doughtie and Destiny Godbolt and 2 each.
    Coach Chuck Eoff said Carrington Chancellor played well on defense along with Doughtie, Moore, Pruitt, King, Hill and Weeks.
     In game two,  the team beat Honey Grove 35-16. Pruitt had 12 points for top honors. Other scorers included: Moore and King, 7 each; Weeks, 3; Doughtie and Hill, 2 apiece.
    In the championship game the LadyCats defeated Chapel Hill 36 -34 at the buzzer.
    Weeks rebounded Moore's shot and score as time expired.
    Top scorers included: Moore, 10; Doughtie and King, 8 each;  Weeks, 7;  and Daieyshia Pruitt, 3.
    Eoff said, “Chancellor,  Godbolt and Hill had a very good defensive game, as did Doughtie, Moore, Pruitt, King, and Weeks. Balance scoring and team defense played a great role in sealing the victory against a physical 3-point shooting Chapel Hill team.”
    The SSMS seventh grade Lady Cats defeated Chapel Hill in a close game 20-19 to win their division. Kaylee Jefferson led the team with 12 points, followed by Macee Hollins and Alyssa Abron with 4 points. Imani Taylor and Laila King both led the team with 3 steals each. Jamia Hall led the team in rebounds with 6. Kate Potts and Anden Hammack both led the team with 2 assists.
     In the second game, SSMS defeated Denison 1, 29-20.  Jefferson led the team with 20 points; Hammack scored 4 points and Hannah Dixon,  Alyssa Abron and King all had 2 points each. Mieke Vanbenthem and Karlee Adams both dominated the backboards leading the team with 5 rebounds each. Coaches said Taylor,  Abron and Potts all had an outstanding defensive game. Hall led the team with 3 defensive blocks.
     Sulphur Springs beat defeated Denison 2 in the championship game, 27-13.  Jefferson had 13 points, Hall  scored 8 points; Taylor, Adams, King all had 2 points.  Abron  led the team with 6 steals. Potts and Dixon both had several assists. Hammack and Vanbenthem both out rebounded the opposing team with 5 rebounds each.
