Sulphur Springs teams posted two wins and one loss in Friday soccer tournament action.
In Friday tournament action in Rockwall, the Wildcats took a hard-fought 3-1 win over Carrollton Newman Smith.
The Wildcats broke open a scoreless game with three second half goals.
Alex Torres got Sulphur Springs on the board using an assist from Tony Bravo to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Bravo later scored a goal of his own as the team went up 2-0. The final goal came by Leo Sanchez with an assist by Torres.
Newman Smith added a late goal with Sulphur Springs winning by a 3-1 final.
The Wildcats were scheduled to play Dallas Samuel at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Sulphur Springs (3-2-2) could advance to the final round, depending on the outcome of Saturday’s game.
The Lady Cats played twice Friday taking a win and a loss in the Athens Tournament.
Sulphur Springs fell to Mabank, 2-0.
The Lady Cats had scoring opportunities, but were unable to score.
Things went better in the second game with Sulphur Springs winning 1-0.
Kinzi Irving got the goal for the Lady Cats.
Sulphur Springs(4-2-1) finished third in pool play.
“On the surface the result seems a little disappointing because we had such high expectations. But we were extremely competitive in every game. Just lacking that refinement that will put us over the top and which will be looking to find in the next couple weeks before the start of district play,” said Jesus DeLeon, Sulphur Springs head varsity girls soccer coach.
