TEXARKANA — The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats dropped their second consecutive District 14-4A game, losing to Texas High 81-59 here Wednesday.
The Lady Tigers opened the game with a 12-2 run and never looked back. Texas High was ahead 20-9 at the end of the first quarter.
By halftime, the Lady Cats were on the short end of a 38-25 score.
"It was a blur. It was not a pretty game for us. Texas High played very well and we didn't," said Jeff Chapman, Lady Cats head basketball coach. "We were behind most of the game by a large margin. Texas High had a big lead early and we could not stop them. They shot the ball well and rebounded. They did the things you have to do to win. We were unable to stop them."
Desi Debase had a night to remember with 24 points, including eight 3-pointers.
Destiny Wade turned in a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds in the game. Shakoja Debase had 15 points and popped the net on three 3-pointers.
Chapman said the scoring from the outside was a bright spot, but not enough to key a victory.
The game was decided by the shooting and scoring of the Lady Tigers.
"I outsmarted myself when I was trying different things," Chapman said. "I should have stuck with what we had done to win earlier games. But we played man-to-man and zone. We switched out of our half court trap. We did not play well on defense. We did not move our feet or help out. Texas High has good athletes and we could not stay with them. We were not capable of slowing them down. Texas High had to shoot a high percentage of their shots."
The Lady Cats shot 21 percent on two-point shots Wednesday.
The loss dropped the Lady Cats to 19-9 overall, 2-2 in district. Texas High is now 19-3, 3-1.
