The work for another successful run in powerlifting is being done now by Sulphur Springs athletes.
Junior Luis Gamez and sophomore Jesse Ortiz lead a group of determined lifters now working toward the season which opens Saturday in Forney.
Gamez went to state last year taking 10th place in the 123-pound class. Jesse Ortiz, who advanced to regional in 2012, will probably be competing against in the 114-pound class.
Other members of the team include junior Dedrick Smith; sophomores, Levi Williams and Landon Watkins and freshmen lifters, Alex Gamez, Layton Pace, Dakota Patton, Draylon Porter and Brandon Foster.
Coach Jeremy Offutt takes over the reins of the program. Offutt, the offensive line coach in football, said he has worked with weights as a player, but never been involved in competing or coaching powerlifting.
“This is all new to me. They are putting in the work now to get ready,” Offutt said.
The Wildcats will lift Saturday in Forney to open the season.
The next meet is Jan. 26 in Sulphur Springs. Last year a large, talented field competed in action held in the multi-purpose building.
