ROYSE CITY — Sulphur Springs split a pair of varsity basketball games played Saturday in the final round of the Royse City Tournament.
The Wildcats opened Saturday play with a 46-36 win over Seagoville. Reid Burns again was the top scorer, pumping in 11 points.
Sulphur Springs fell behind 10-5 after one period, but came storming back. The Wildcats outscored Seagoville, 17-9 in the second period to take a 22-19 halftime lead.
In later action, Red Oak took an 84-46 win over the Wildcats. Sulphur Springs got 10 points from Burns for top scoring honors.
Red Oak bolted to a quick lead, jumping ahead 34-16 at the half. The Wildcats could not recover and lost the game, getting outscored 50-30 in the final two frames.
“Overall, very pleased finishing up 2-2 in a very competitive 4A tournament,” said Jeremy Josey, SSHS head boys basketball coach. We are doing good things, just have to be more consistent and understand that when we play as ‘one team’ we have success. When we have play as individuals, we have problems. The guys saw examples of that this weekend and hopefully we learned a little more about ourselves.”
Josey said, “We play North Lamar Tuesday. They are a traditionally strong program. They will be a challenge for us, and will pressure us full court. It will be a good test to see how we respond after having a little success, then falling back down pretty hard.”
