The SSHS girls rolled up 140 points at the meet, the most at a district meet in school history, and by doing it also qualified five individual runners and all three relay teams for the Class 4A, Region II track and field meet at UT-Arlington in two weeks.
The SSHS boys, meanwhile, qualified two of their relays and qualified three individual runners as well.
Senior Ayana Taylor added another district championship to her resume on Wednesday in the 300-meter hurdles, securing her place at regional in four different events. She won the triple jump on Tuesday, and will also be running competing at the regional meet in the 4x200 and 4x400 relays.
Taylor won the hurdles with a strong finish, clocking a time of 45.27 seconds to take the gold medal.
She was the only Lady Cat to win a district title, but the not the only one to qualify for regional. Freshman Desi Mosley placed second in the 100 meters and classmate Chrissalynd Person was second in the 400-meter dash. In addition, distance runners Madison Ramirez and Mati Massey, who finished second and third in Tuesday’s two-mile race, placed in the same order of finish in Wednesday’s 1,600-meter run.
Mosley, who also ran on two of the relays, clocked a time of 13.05 seconds to take second in the 100 meters, followed closely in fourth place by teammate Briana Ivery in 13.27 seconds. Ivery, Mosley Person and Daizia Jackson placed second in the 4x100 relay in a time of 49.57 seconds, their fastest time of the season.
The 4x200 relay of Mosley, Taylor, Jackson and Labrandis Adams ran a time of 1:47.12 seconds to also take the silver medal.
The 4x400 relay team of Person, Adams, McKenzie Sorely and Taylor placed third to qualify for regional in a time of 4:10.41, their fastest time of the season, helped out by Person’s opening split of 58.5 seconds.
Person ran a strong 400 meter dash as well, placing third in time of 59.23 seconds to qualify for regional, finishing behind two-time state qualifier Jaycee Parker of Denison. Adams was sixth in the same race in 1:02.61.
In the metric mile, the Lady Cats will send both Ramirez and Massey to regional in their second events. Like the metric two-mile race on Tuesday, Ramirez immediately went to the front of the pack while Massey settled toward the back and started working her way up, lap after lap.
Ramirez ran in second place the entire race, finishing in 5:43.69, while Massey used a sustained last-lap kick to move from fifth place into the final qualifying spot by passing the third place runner with about 20 meters to go. She clocked a time of 5:47.88.
In other races, senior Micah Stalcup will be the regional alternate in the 100-meter hurdles after coming in fourth in a time of 17.15 seconds.
Overall, the Lady Cats finished in second place in the team standings with 140 points. Texas High won the division with 217.
The SSHS boys had their own district champion, and it was senior sprinter Kendrick Daniels. After having the second-fastest qualifying time in the 100 meters, Daniels held off a pack of Texas High runners to win the title in 11.11 seconds.
Daniels also ran the second leg of the sprint relay that took third in 42.95 seconds. He was joined on the relay team by Brennan Brock, Cody Clayton and Dadrian Smith.
Smith will be going to regional in two other events as well, the 400-meter dash and the 4x400 relay. In the open quarter, Smith finished strong to take second place in 50.90 seconds. He then ran about a 50-flat leg on the mile relay as he joined with Isaiah Lacy, Jonathan Carlisle and Matt Brice to finish third in a time of 3:30.95, their best clocking of the season.
The Wildcats got a very pleasant surprise in the 1,600-meter run when freshman Carter White ran a second second-half of the race to move into third place and qualify for regional in time of 4:57.81. He was followed closely by classmate Tony Velasquez, who finished fourth in 5:00.69, and will be the regional alternate in both the metric mile and two-mile.
The Wildcats had some other near-misses when it came to qualifying for regional.
The 4x200 relay team was edged out of qualifying as they finished fourth in a time of 1:31.59, just ½ second out of second place and 16/100ths of a second out of third. The team was composed of Brock, Carlisle, Daniels and freshman Zach Spigner.
Spigner and sophomore Derrick Ingram finished in fifth and sixth place, respectively, in the 110-meter hurdles, coming in at 16.77 and 17.03 seconds. Colton Wise was in the mix for fourth place, but fell over the sixth hurdle and finished seventh.
Lacy, a sophomore, placed fifth in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:10.4.
Overall, the Wildcats accumulated 75 points to finish in fourth place. Texas High won the division with 252 points.
