Winnsboro coach Seth McAfee said the close win almost gave him heart failure as his squad had to stage a second half rally to claim the hard-fought victory.
Cooper built a 28-21 lead at the half and appeared poised to continue the dominance and win the game.
But Winnsboro had another plan in mind, Trevor King scored 12 of his game-high 19 points in the second half as he sparked the Red Raiders with scoring and rebounding.
The Cooper squad opened the third quarter with a bucket inside from Dawson Rackley and a 3-pointer from the corner by Larry Richard. The Bulldogs were up by 10 points, 33-23 and feeling comfortable.
But the Red Raiders went on the warpath 11-2 scoring burst in a three minute span which included points from Colton Garrett, Sean Ditto and Christian Bosold. Ditto's three-point play that saw him make a free throw while getting hacked in the act of scoring, highlighted the action. Cooper was clinging to a 35-34 lead with 3:10 left in the third frame.
Winnsboro took the lead to stay a minute later, when Ditto canned a 3-pointer from the top of the key. Cooper answered with a 3-ball swishing the twine from the corner pocket off the fingers of Tommy Walker to keep it a one-point game. The third period ended with the Red Raiders holding a 41-40 advantage.
McAfee's pep talk got his team excited as they began the fourth frame with a 12-4 scoring run. King scored eight points during this torrid streak, six points coming off put backs in the lane on offensive rebounds. With 4:16 left in the game, Winnsboro held a 53-46 lead.
Moments later Cooper had an opening to score with King picking up his fifth foul and forced to leave the game with 1:59 left on the clock. Winnsboro took up the rebounding and scoring slack with Cole Swanner, Curtis Vega and Nick Parton all making free throws as Winnsboro won by a 59-54 final over the Bulldogs.
