Funeral services for Kerry W. Garmon, age 60, of Saltillo, were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 14, 2009, at West Oaks Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Garry Jordan officiating and Jack Arnwine assisting.
Interment followed in Miller Grove Cemetery with Jeff Fite, Dutch Vallaster, Max Wardrup, Woody Garmon, Kenneth Stripling and Paul Jones serving as pallbearers.
Mr. Garmon passed away Saturday, December 12, 2009, at East Texas Medical Center in Mt. Vernon.
Mr. Garmon was born on May 23, 1949, in Greenville, TX, the son of Frank and Elaine (Marable) Garmon.
He married Brenda White on June 28, 1980, in Greenwood, TX. She survives.
Mr. Garmon worked for the Saltillo ISD for over 35 years. For the first 15 years he taught English and coached basketball and cross country. The last few years, in addition to teaching math to 6, 7 and 8th graders, he was the baseball coach. He helped teach the U.I.L. math. For 15 years, he was the superintendent of Saltillo where he retired in 2002.
Mr. Garmon was hired on an emergency certificate while still in college. He completed his bachelor’s while working, teaching and coaching and went on to get his Master’s Degree, Administrator Certificate and Superintendent Certificate. He always felt immense gratitude to the Saltillo ISD and community for hiring him this way and always wanted to give back to the community and school. His entire life has revolved around the Saltillo ISD, its staff and students. He was proud to have served them.
In the last 4 years, he taught math to the 6, 7, 8th graders at Saltillo and has truly enjoyed working with the students. He was very proud of their math achievements and UIL achievements. He was proud of the baseball team he has coached the last few years and their advancements past the district level.
Mr. Garmon was President of the Saltillo Volunteer Fire Department, Chairman of the Saltillo Homecoming Committee, Director of the Brinker Water Supply Corporation and former sponsor of the Saltillo Beta Club. He liked working with cows and restoring old cars. He was a loving son, husband, father and dear friend.
Other survivors include his mother; two sons, Colin Garmon and Nolan Garmon, both of Saltillo; two brothers, Rick Garmon of Miller Grove, Kenny Garmon and wife Nelda of Saltillo; two sisters, Kathy Steele and husband Chris of Miller Grove and Lisa Ali and husband Khalid of England; nephews Rusty, Ryan and Jay Garmon of Saltillo, William and J.J. Steele of Sulphur Springs, Andrew Steele of Miller Grove, Zachary Ali of England and Bobby Goldsmith of Saltillo; nieces Angie Pipkin of Saltillo and Kelsey Steele of Miller Grove; great-nephews Christopher and Donnie Steele; great-nieces, Maysen and MaKenzi Pipkin of Saltillo.
He was preceded in death by his father.
