Funeral services for Ernest L. McCulley, “The Can Man,” age 91, will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, Texas, with Bro. Richard Deteau officiating.
Bobby Emmons, Jay McGuire, Allen Glenn, Jeffery Freeman, Jed Powell and Quintin Kent will serve as pallbearers. Danny Woods will serve as honorary pallbearer.
No formal visitation will be held.
Mr. McCulley passed away Tuesday evening, July 28, 2009, at Sunny Springs Health and Rehab.
Ernest L. McCulley was born February 8, 1918, in Fort Worth, Texas, the son of Edward McCulley and Minnie Elizabeth Vines McCulley.
He married Elizabeth Ruth Henry in Arizona in 1948. She preceded him in death.
Mr. McCulley was known as “The Can Man” around the Cumby area, where collected cans for years, making many friends along the way. He was the former owner and operator of a bait shop in Vernon, Texas. He developed his own brand of stink bait which was in high demand from fishermen all over the country. He was a medical technician with the Army in World War II, serving in England and France. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Vernon, Texas.
Surviving family members include his daughters, Pat Emmons and husband Bobby of Cumby, Minnie Glenn and husband Allen of Park Hall Md., Betty Hill and husband Rodney of Durant, Okla., and Brenda McGuire and husband Jay of Lavon; three brothers, Robert McCulley and wife Shirley, Jimmy McCulley and wife Penny and Jerry McCulley and wife Vina; one sister, Marie Watkins; nine grandchildren, Pam Emmons, Melissa Woods, Vanessa Rodriguez, Nicole McGuire, Jodi Powell, Jed Powell, Jessica Carr, Jeff Freeman and Glenda Hall; and 12 great-grandchildren, Dezirae Rodriguez, Quintin Kent, Niesa Hall, Lizzie Carr, Chris Carr, Zachary Freeman, Isabella Freeman, Jason Mays, Samantha Mays , Carter Shearer, Preston Baldwin and Jacie Baldwin.
Mr. McCulley was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Johnny McCulley, Bobby McCulley, Clifford McCulley, Sam McCulley and Tom McCulley; one, sister, Evelyn Fults; and one great-granddaughter, Britteny Kent.
