Funeral services for Mary Thornton Pearce of Sulphur Springs, Texas will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, July 11, 2009 at Myra Wilson Chapel, Sulphur Springs City Cemetery with Tommy Johnston officiating. Grandsons Marshall McInnis, Ben Wood, Michael Pearce, Derek Wood, Andy Wood, Stanton Pearce, Adam Pearce and Brandon Pearce will serve as pallbearers.
Mary Thornton was born February 2, 1926, the daughter of Emmet Thornton and Alma Caldwell Thornton. She married Frank Pearce in Sulphur Springs February 2, 1946. Mr. Pearce preceded her in death September 8, 1983.
Mrs. Pearce was the former co-owner and operator of the Sulphur Springs Floral Company. After Mr. Pearce’s death she returned to Sulphur Springs Floral and remained there for many years. Mary was a former Wildcat Cheerleader and avid fan of the Texas Rangers. She was also a long time member of First United Methodist Church. She loved to travel with Carolyn and David, playing cards with those she met along the way, never meeting a stranger. She was known for her flower gardens. Her legacy was her love for watching and helping things grow, be it flowers, her garden, her children, grand-children or great-grandchildren. She touched all with her joyous zest for life.
Mrs. Pearce passed away July 10, 2009 at her residence in Sulphur Springs at the age of 83 years.
Surviving family includes her sons, John Pearce and wife Jaime of Sugar Land, TX and Frank G. Pearce of Sache, TX; sisters, Martha Lou Hughes of Decatur, TX and Carolyn Murray and husband David of Sherman, TX; grandchildren, Amy McInnis and husband Marshall of Sugar Land, TX, Mike Pearce and wife Kay and Derek Wood and wife Trish both of Ft. Worth, TX, Andy Wood and wife Noelle of San Antonio, TX, Brandon Pearce and wife Erica of Scottsdale, AR, Stanton Pearce and wife Mandi of Aledo, TX, and Adam Pearce of Dallas, also survive along with 13 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Pearce was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Martha Mary Wood in 1988; and one brother, Dozier Thornton in 2002.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Sulphur Springs City Cemetery Society, Sulphur Springs, TX 75482.
No formal visitation will be held.
