Funeral services for Atha Lae Petty Gaines, 92, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, in West Oaks Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jimmy Henry officiating.
Interment will be at Cumby Cemetery with Joshua David Gaines, John David Bivins, James Michael Bivins, Shannon Lee Gaines, Hayden Gerald Hollon and Philip Anthony Doty serving as pallbearers.
Mrs. Gaines died Oct. 13, 2013, at Carriage House Manor.
Atha Lae Petty was born in Iowa Park on Nov. 27, 1920, to David Owen Petty and Pinkie Mae Caudle Petty.
Mrs. Gaines married Barney Lee Gaines March 14, 1941, in Paris. He preceded her in death.
Most of Mrs. Gaines life was spent in Cumby. She graduated from Cumby High School and was valedictorian of her class; she graduated from East Texas State College with a bachelor of science degree.
She taught school at Cumby ISD for 32 years. She began her career teaching home economics then became the business teacher. Mrs. Gaines was the first yearbook sponsor of the “Trojan” in 1942.
Mrs. Gaines was a member of Texas State Teacher's Association, Texas Retired Teachers' Association and Sulphur Springs Area Retired Teachers' Association.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cumby.
Survivors include two sons, Gerald Lee Gaines and David Wayne Gaines, both of Cumby; one daughter, Jeanette Gaines Bivins of Cumby; grandchildren Kelly Ann Gaines Warrington of Sulphur Springs, Shannon Lee Gaines of Cumby, John David Bivins and wife, Halie, of Colorado City, Joni Bivins Doty and husband, Philip, of Colorado City, James Michael Bivins of San Angelo and Joshua David Gaines of College Station; great-grandchildren Hayley Dawn Gaines Radney and husband, Chris, of Sulphur Springs, Hayden Gerald Hollon of Cumby, Skylar Lenae Gaines of Cumby, Hayden Jacobs of Dallas and Graceyn Jayde Bivins of Colorado City; and two great-great-grandchildren, Adrian Gabriel Radney and Colter Michael Radney, both of Sulphur Springs.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers J.W. Petty, Loyd Owen Petty, James Alvin (Jack) Petty and Wylie Vernon (Sug) Petty; sister Ruby Petty Yarbrough; and son Gerald.
