Services for Elder Alvin Franklin Jr., 80, of Sulphur Springs will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, at Mitchell Chapel C.O.G.I.C. with Supt. N. J. Gatlin officiating.

Interment will follow at East Caney Cemetery.

Viewing will be from from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, at West Oaks Funeral Home.

He died Friday, Aug. 9, 2013.

Elder Alvin Franklin was born on July 12, 1933, in the community of East Caney to Alvin and Mattie Lou Malone Franklin.

He married Merlie Bogar of Ladonia. She preceded him in death after 51 years of marriage.

Elder Alvin Franklin was a longtime resident of Hopkins County. In 1968, he began working for Banks Tire Company, a distributor of Goodyear tires and an appliance store. He continued with the company until his retirement at the age of 62.

He received his formal education from the East Caney school system and later graduated from Douglas High School in Sulphur Springs. He also served in U.S. Army, receiving an honorable discharge in 1957.

Elder Alvin Franklin was a member of Mitchell Chapel Church of God in Christ, and during his tenure there became an ordained minister. He also served as a Sunday school teacher and was the church superindent of the Sunday school for more than 20 years. Under the leadership of Pastor Nelson J. Gatlin, he was appointed assistant pastor, and remained so until his death.

Survivors include his five children, Betty Franklin of Greenville, Donnell Franklin (Yolanda) of Arlington, Carnell Hall-Alex (Roy) and Ennis Franklin (Taffy), all of Sulphur Springs, and Joseph Franklin of Lewisville; two brothers, Eugene Franklin (Lola Faye) and Noah Lee Franklin, all of Sulphur Springs; two sisters, Madine Cash and Margie Thomas (Bob), all of Sulphur Springs; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Haskel Lee Franklin and John Franklin; one sister, Laura Franklin; and one grandchild, Jermaine Franklin.

Flowers may be left at West Oaks Funeral Home Wednesday only.

Arrangements are by J.C. White Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant.
