A funeral service for James Alford, 89, of Sulphur Springs will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 20, at Spence Chapel at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mark Bryant officiating.
A military graveside service, under the direction of the Hopkins County Military Coalition, will follow at New Pickton Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Jason Sloan, Harrison Hoffman, Scott Dixey, Steve Hoffman, Mike O’Dell and Jimmy O’Dell. Honorary pallbearers will be the Joy Class at First Baptist Church.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, July 19, 2013, at Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home.
James Alford died Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at Carriage House Manor Cottages.
He was born May 1, 1924, in Pickton, the son of Sid Alford and Valeria (Clay) Alford.
He married Evorine O’Dell in Pickton on May 31, 1947. She survives.
He was a retired teacher, coach and business manager for Dallas Independent School District and a member of First Baptist Church.
He was active in the volunteer Christian builders and he served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.
Other survivors include a daughter, Nancy Dixey and husband, Scott; grandchildren Holly Hoffman and husband, Steve, and Jason Sloan; and great-grandchildren Haley Hoffman, Harrison Hoffman and Presley Sloan.
He was preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters.
Memorials may be made to Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas and/or the American Heart Association.
