A retired program director at the Lafourche Parish Alcoholism and Family Counseling Program, MayDell Smothers died Monday, Feb. 9, 2009, surrounded by her family. She was 88, a resident of Plaquemine and a native of Purley, Texas. Visiting at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Plaquemine, on Wednesday, Feb. 11, from 9 a.m. until religious service at noon, conducted by the Rev. Cleo Milano and the Rev. Phil Spano. Interment in Grace Memorial Park.

Survived by her daughter, Kay Boudreaux and husband Gerald; son, Tommie Smothers and wife Sandra Repp; seven grand-children, Brian Boudreaux and wife Stacy, John Boudreaux, Tommie D. Smothers Jr. and fiance Leslie, Timmie Smothers and wife Becky, Pam Boesch and husband Thommy, Tammie Romero and husband James, and Vickie Raffray and fiance Coan Bueche Jr.; 20 great-grandchildren, Joshua, Jennifer, Blake, Brandon, Tristan, Seth, Noah, Mallory, Caleb, Carrie Grace, Jacob, Kaylyn, Sara, Anna, Trace, Dakota, Gracie, Baylie, Ivon and Hayden; and devoted nephews, Merle Morris, of Weatherford, Texas, and Harold Parker, of Sulphur Springs, Texas. Preceded in death by her parents, George W. and Josie Lou Lawson Parker; husband, Thomas Ivon Smothers; sisters, Ruby Wilburn and Eulalia "Bobby" Ballard; brothers, Estes Parker, Horace Parker and Harold Dean Parker.

Pallbearers will be Thommy Boesch, Brian Raffray, James Romero, Dakota Smothers, Jacob Raffray and Joshua Boudreaux. Honorary pallbearers are Murphy Blanchard, Dr. Gerard Falgoust, E.J. Deshotel, Brian and John Boudreaux and Tommie and Timmie Smothers.

She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She was a talented artist of many crafts. As the founder and program director of the Lafourche Parish Alcoholism and Family Counseling Program, she took in and cared for many recovering alcoholics and their families along with her husband, Tom. She loved her weekly card games, bingo and pokeno group. Special thanks to Dr. Gerard Falgoust for his many years of devoted care and the incredible nursing staff at River West Medical Center who made her last birthday so special.
