Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah Mathews of Sulphur Springs, Texas, will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 21, 2013, at the Murray-Orwosky Funeral Home, with interment at the Richland Cemetery in Hopkins County.  


Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, at 1 p.m.

Sarah Gribble Mathews was born on July 21, 1919, the daughter of Jeff Ray and Katie Gribble and was reared by her aunts, Minnie Gribble and Josephine Carter.

A graduate of Bonham, Texas, High School, she earned both the Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees. Early in her career, she was administrative assistant for Sulphur Springs schools. For the latter 17 years, she was a teacher in the Lubbock Public Schools, retiring after 33 years of public school service.  

She was a member of the Church of Christ.

She and Joseph Edgar Mathews were married on Dec. 25, 1937, and to this union were born these beloved descendants: a daughter, Mrs. Ben (Jo Ann) Cross; a son, Jerry Dale Mathews; the following grandchildren, Dr. Carol (Mrs. John) Wise, Mrs. Curtis (Cheryl) Oliver, Mrs. Michael (Jeanne) Baxley, Connie Sue Mathews and Barry Lee Mathews; and these great-grandchildren, Ben Rogers Wise, Madeline Wise, Hunter Lee Mathews, Tyler Joseph Mathews, Kinsey Mathews, Trey Mathews and James Baxley Cross.

After 56 years of matrimony, her husband died on April 4, 1994. Mrs. Mathews is survived by all their descendants.
