At 18, he joined the United States Air Force and served his country for 20 years, retiring in 1968. In August of 1951, he married the love of his life, Frances McCann. E.C. and Frances started their family and were blessed with three children, Gail, Michael and Cheryl. Together while serving in the military, the family traveled all over the United States, Japan and Morocco. After his service in the military, the Johns family moved to Duncanville, Texas, where E.C. began his second career for the Dallas County Health Department from which he retired after 20 years.
E.C.'s second passion was dogs. Dogs from Saint Bernards to German Shepherds to Beagles to mutts — he loved them all! He had a special way of loving and training them. They were never just dogs, they were part of the family.
E.C. will be remembered for his joyful spirit and his love of his family. He is survived by his wife, Frances of Duncanville; daughters, Gail Johns of Cedar Hill, and Cheryl Ingersoll and husband, Kris, of Midlothian. He so loved his grandchildren, Heather, Leslie and Jake; his sisters, Hazel Hargrave and Jackie McCann and her husband, Elzie.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Glynna Brice; and his son, Michael.
Visitation will be held Thursday, July 5, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the David Clayton and Sons Funeral Home, 200 West Center in Duncanville. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 6, at David Clayton and Sons. He will be buried with full military honors at 2:15 p.m. at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.
