Funeral services for James Robert Smith, 54, of Dallas will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at Carroll-Lehr Funeral Chapel in Athens with the Rev. Josh
Burial will follow in Red Hill Cemetery in Henderson County with Alex Smith, David Olsen, Kevin Simpson, Scotty Hanks, Clay Smith, Garrett Smith, David Slay and Robert Cote serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be his granddaughters, Gabriela Vasquez and Aleigh Vasquez.
Visitation will be Saturday, Jan. 24, from 10 a.m. until service time in the chapel of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home.
Mr. Smith died Wednesday, Jan. 21, in Mesquite.
He was born in Cortez, Colo., on April 16, 1954, to Taylor Leroy Sr. and Shirley Janice Farmer Smith.
He married Debbie Smith. She survives.
Mr. Smith graduated from H. Grady Spruce High School in 1974. His careers included lathe machine operator and owner of a telephone equipment and services company. Most recently he was a truck driver for Bodin Concrete Company in Rowlett.
Other survivors include four daughters, Selena Faye Smith, Amber Janice Smith and Madalyn Elizabeth Smith, all of Athens, and Shelby Jordan Smith of Sulphur Springs; three grandchildren, Alexander Tayte Smith, Gabriela Cambrie Vasquez and Aleigh Raelyn Vasquez, all of Athens; his mother, Shirley Janice Slay of Eustace; four brothers, Taylor Leroy Smith Jr. of Dallas, William Michael Slay and Donald Paul Slay, both of Eustace, and Bradley Smith of Bloomfield, N.M.; and two sisters, Shirley Darlene Smith of Dallas and Sandra Smith of Mayfield, Colo.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his father, Taylor Leroy Smith Sr.; and one son, Eric London Smith.
