Stephen Turner to speak at Genealogical Society lock-in

Amateur history buffs and family-tree crafters have reason to rejoice this weekend. The Hopkins County Genealogical Society will be hosting their annual lock-in Saturday, July 9, from 9 a.m. to midnight. The lock-in will feature Dr. Stephen Turner, author of several historical fiction novels and a member of the Texas Genealogical Society. Dr. Turner will hold a program starting at 10 a.m. where he will discuss his two newest novels, “On the Road to Glory” and “Up from the Ashes.”

About 3,000 people watch the fireworks show during the 20th Annual Independence Day Celebration from the historic Hopkins County Courthouse square Saturday night. The celebration included music by the Northeast Texas Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Douglas Bakenhaus, and a fireworks show underwritten by Alliance Bank, Grocery Supply Company and Circle E Western Store. Tentative ID made on skull found last week

Police say an Illinois identification card may belong to a person whose skeletal remains were found last week in a hay meadow just west of Sulphur Springs.


Nearby cities plan fireworks shows over next 3 nights

The 20th Annual Independence Day Concert and Fireworks Show returns to the Hopkins County Courthouse Square Saturday night, but fans of fireworks will have multiple nights to enjoy large-scale show in other cities, as well.


Bone fragments located where skull was found; ID card from Illinois turns up nearby

Sulphur Springs police investigators say that bone fragments have been recovered near where what is believed to be a human skull was found in a hay meadow just west of the city off State Highway 11 west.
