Thousands line streets for hometown hero

U.S. Army Sgt. Tanner Higgins’ final ride through his former hometown Monday was marked by thousands of people, flags at half staff, yellow ribbons and businesses and yards bedecked in the patriotic colors he died fighting for.

For Emilia Attlesey, 2012 is a bittersweet year. She is retiring from Sulphur Springs Independent School District after 14 years, the last 12 at the Early Childhood Learning Center. She won't, however, wait for the last day of the school year. Emilia is going to cut classes the last week, and for some very good reasons.


SSMS Blue and Varsity bands bring home sweepstakes

Two of the three bands from Sulphur Springs Middle School came home with sweepstakes awards, and the third a first division rating in sight-reading at the University Interscholastic League Concert and Sight-reading competition held April 17-18 in Mount Pleasant.


Body of Sgt. Tanner Higgins scheduled to arrive in Greenville Monday morning; services set Tuesday

Fallen Army Sgt. Tanner Higgins, the 2007 Sulphur Springs High School graduate killed April 14 in Afghanistan, will be buried Tuesday, April 24, in Cypress Cemetery in Winnsboro.


Cooper Lake State Park hosting Kid’s Fish Derby

Children from 6 to 13 years of age are invited to participate in the Kid’s Fish Derby to be held at Cooper Lake State Park/South Sulphur Unit Saturday, April 21.
