The 2010 Hopkins County Junior Market Livestock Show and Sale activities will get in full swing on Thursday afternoon in Hopkins County Regional Civic Center with the start of showmanship and livestock judging and continues through Saturday evening with the Show of Champions.
Last year’s Show of Champions raised more than a quarter-million dollars. The sale of show animals enables these outstanding youngsters to pay for the costs associated with raising their show animals and, more importantly, helps them go to college.
Sponsored by Northeast Texas Livestock Association, the program helps the youth of Hopkins County develop their abilities to become conscientious, caring and responsible adults and to provide the incentive, learning opportunities and business experience for the youth to grow into future leaders for the county.
Through the process of raising a market animal the students learn responsibility and success. Their successes come as the result of both financial and personal sacrifice. These students, representing 4-H and FFA chapters throughout the county, are dedicated to their projects, and grow to realize the results of their actions.
In most junior livestock shows, the local show is a stepping stone to competition in the major stock shows such as San Antonio, Houston or the State Fair. In the Hopkins Junior Market Livestock Show, however, the animals exhibited will be sold at the end of the show, according to Mario Villarino, Hopkins County Extension Agent - Agriculture.
“In this particular one, those animals that actually win will be sold to the best buyer in an auction setting,” Villarino said. “Different buyers can donate to the kids that have actually raised the animals. It’s a very nice event in the sense that the youth can learn how to bring an animal up, and actually get rewarded by the money that is brought to table at the time of the sale.”
The 2010 show starts with the lamb and goat weigh-in begining at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, and will be followed by the lamb showmanship and lamb show at 6 p.m. Showmanship and judging in the goat show will begin immediately following sheep judging.
