A 31-year-old Saltillo man died Friday night following a four-wheeler crash on County Road 3351. His son reportedly sustained minor injuries.
County dispatchers first were alerted at 9:14 p.m. of the crash on CR 3351, which is located just west of FM 269. The caller said a boy had been involved in a four-wheeler crash. The father was still at the crash scene. The boy had run to a neighboring residence for help.
Hopkins County and Pickton-Pine Forest firefighters, Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers and Hopkins County Emergency Medical Services personnel were dispatched to the crash scene. A medical helicopter was also put on standby.
Officials found the father, identified as Joshua Highfield, in the ditch by the crashed vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Ronny Glossup.
The boy, 8 years old, was kept at the nearby residence and was checked over by firefighters and paramedics for injuries. Authorities at the scene Friday night reported the boy had a bump on his head, but it did not appear to be serious or life-threatening nor did he have any other apparent injures.
DPS had not released any more information as of press time Saturday, including the injured juvenile’s name and age.
Highfield, a farmer, and his son were said to have been traveling around a corner at an unsafe speed, causing the crash, according to the initial crash report by DPS Trooper Cori Hale, who lead the crash investigation. Troopers George Greenway and Trent Price assisted Hale.
HCSO Sgt. Daniel Winn, and deputies Koby Hume, Walt Kimmel and Todd Evans also assisted crews at the scene.
