Curse you, Punxsutawney Phil — the groundhog of Gobbler’s Knob may only be right about 40 percent of the time, but this year’s prediction of a long winter looks to be spot on.

Just a week after record snowfall in Sulphur Springs, more frosty flakes are in the forecast, along with a chance of hail tonight.

The National Weather Service office in Fort Worth issued a special weather statement and a Hazardous Weather Outlook early this morning for Hopkins County and North Texas.

“Showers and thunderstorms are expected to spread across North Texas from west to east after midnight tonight,” forecasters wrote in the special statement. “Isolated strong thunderstorms with hail up to the size of nickels will be possible after midnight tonight north of Interstate 20.”

There is an 80 percent chance of thunderstorms, some severe Sunday, mostly in areas east of I-35, with isolated strong to severe thunderstorms possible.

The storms diminish Sunday afternoon, only to see cold air move in Sunday night.

“As an upper level system moves across Texas on Tuesday, areas of snow are expected to develop,” the Hazardous Weather Outlook stated. “There will be a potential for accumulating snow and travel impacts across all of North Texas Monday night into Tuesday night.”
