Maggie Burbank looked over the full house at Hopkins County Regional Civic Center Arena Sunday night and imagined the stories of personal transformation that could come from the 3,000 participants.
Burbank, segment producer for ABC News Nightline, was at the Hopkins County Regional Civic Center for the kickoff service of the “One Month to Live Challenge” – the largest of its kind in the nation.
Kerry Shook, author of the best selling book, “One Month to Live: Thirty Days to a No-Regrets Life,” was the keynote speaker for the event, which was planned by the Hopkins County Christian Alliance.
Cameras were on hand to film the service, and Burbank will be back several times in the next six weeks to talk to local pastors and parishioners whose lives have been changed by participating in the challenge.
She stressed before the service began that Nightline has NOT yet chosen any family or individual to chronicle their journey but that she will be looking for stories that emerge from people’s experiences as the challenge goes forward. Burbank is looking for stories that will transfer seamlessly to the television, those with substance and lasting power.
“As the challenge goes on, I’m sure stories will come out as people do amazing things,” she said. “I think we’re talking about life-changing stories, transformational stories.”
People who have life-changing experiences are asked to contact their local pastor, who in turn can get in touch with Burbank. She is leaving several small video cameras in Sulphur Springs for pastors to use if she gives them the go-ahead.
After the challenge is complete, Burbank said she will edit down what could be hundreds of hours of videotape into a segment that will last four to eight minutes.
She hopes that in that segment, she will be able to capture a movement here that could inspire a nation.
“I’m looking for people who are taking this literally,” she said. “This is the last day of your life – very literal, very intense.”
