The recent closing of the Northeast Texas Food Bank was a blow to efforts to help distribute food to people in Hopkins County needing assistance, but a longtime charitable group is stepping up to fill that void for now.
The Hopkins County Community Chest will be accepting donations of food or money this coming Monday, Nov. 23, through Wednesday, Nov. 25.
Donations may be brought to the Community Chest offices at 203 Fuller St. on those days during regular business hours.

“Agencies or individuals that normally make contributions to Northeast Texas Food Bank at this time may consider the Community Chest as a site for these donations,” said Betty Weir, a longtime volunteer with Community Chest. “We decided we needed to let people know that because of the food bank being closed.”
After more than a dozen years supplying food to organizations and people in and around Sulphur Springs, the official announcement came down Oct. 1 that the local food bank, located on Linda Drive, would cease operations immediately.
The food bank was a branch, so to speak, of the North Texas Food Bank in Dallas, which decided to end its contract with the Sulphur Springs entity. That meant the Northeast Texas Food Bank could no longer purchase food from the Dallas organization for 7 cents per pound.
The local food bank’s building and holdings were turned over to the Hopkins County Community Chest after the closing
Weir said any donations received next week at the food bank will be used for general food distribution to various non-profit efforts.
