All of North Texas has been placed under a red flag warning of hazardous burn conditions due to projected high winds through Wednesday evening, which would mark the third consecutive day the warning has been in effect.

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are expected. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and dry vegetation create explosive fire growth potential. Thus, North Texas residents, including those in Hopkins County, are cautioned to avoid all outside burning and welding today if possible, according to the NWS.

The red flag warning became effective at 8 a.m. and continues through 6 p.m. Tuesday for all of North Texas.

A strong low pressure system over the Mississippi Valley and idwest states was expected to bring “a very tight northwesterly pressure gradient over North Texas today.” Southerly winds were expected to increase to 15 to 25 miles per hour with gusts in excess of 35 mph by midday today. At the same time, humidity values were expected to drop to 20 to 25 percent across of North Texas by mid afternoon. The gusty winds and low humidities are expected to result in “critical fire weather conditions this afternoon.”

Winds reached 20 miles per hour from the south, with gusts up to 23 mph, by 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, but had dipped to 18 mph by 11 a.m.

“Do not toss lit cigarette butts outside. Report wild fires to the nearest fire department or law enforcement office,” the NWS forecast notes.

Later tonight, the humidity level “will begin to recover” but wind gusts are expected to continue throughout the nighttime hours. Any ongoing fires may continue to be spread by the gusty winds.

The NWS predicts dangerous fire weather conditions again Wednesday afternoon as a cold front moves through the area, resulting in gusty north winds and dry conditions.

In addition to the potential fire hazard, the motorists, anglers and residents should also take note of the wind advisory. Strong and gusty winds can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. NWS recommends that boaters try to avoid venturing onto open waters of area lakes. Residents are advised to secure trash cans, lawn furniture and other lightweight outdoor objects that may be blown around in the strong winds.
