Got some gently used clothing you’ve been meaning to clean out of your closet? Perhaps you could use a few extra pair of shorts, a jacket or even a backpack or new-to-you shoes? Find it hard to outfit all of your children for school on a fixed budget? Want to help with world relief efforts? First United Methodist Church gladly helps with each of these issues annually during their Back-to-School Clothing Sale.

This year’s event will begin promptly at 8 a.m. this Saturday, Aug. 29, and continue until noon Saturday in the church’s Family Life Center. At 25 cents per item, these new-to-you apparel items are in some instances even better than garage sale rates.

This marks the eighth year First United Methodist Church has sponsored the annual drive, which may be the most effective recycling program the city has ever seen. The clothing spans the size range from toddlers to adults and includes a little bit of everything, including handbags, backpacks, shoes, hats and jackets, and even a few Halloween costumes.

FUMC is currently accepting donations of “gently used clothing” should anyone want to take advantage of the opportunity to clean out their closets and dressers to make room for fall and winter wear. They will take just about any wearable clothing item, as well as backpacks, provided they are in good condition. This year, they’re also accepting donations of hangers for easier display of the many donated items.

All sizes of clothing, backpacks, shoes, jackets and hangers are being accepted in the designated “drop boxes” located in front and back of the Family Life Center at FUMC this week.

All funds raised from the sale will go to United Methodist Committee on Relief, a non-profit global humanitarian aid organization. UMCOR is working in more than 80 countries worldwide, including the United States, to alleviate human suffering caused by war, conflict or natural disaster, with open hearts and minds to all people. The organization responds to “natural or civil disasters that are interruptions of such magnitude that they overwhelm a community’s ability to recover on its own.”

UMCOR partners with local organizations and survivors to rebuild their livelihoods, health and homes. In times of acute crisis, the group mobilizes emergency supplies, fresh water and temporary shelter to stricken areas, then stays as long as it takes to implement long-term recovery. UMCOR helps distribute school kits, seeds, health kits, fresh water and tools, and helps build houses, health clinics and schools after catastrophes, according to the UMCOR website.
