Sulphur Springs residents and tax payers will have one last chance this evening to ask any questions pertinent to this year’s tax rate and budget before each is adopted by school trustees.

The  public meeting regarding the school’s tax rate, which marks the third budget meeting school trustees have held this month, will begin at 6 p.m. Monday in the board room of Sulphur Springs Independent School District Administration Building, located at 631 Connally St.

Immediately following the public hearing, the board will hear administrative reports, then consider approving the proposed $33.7 million budget and tax rate for 2009-2010 as well as budget amendments for the 2008-2009 fiscal year which ends on Aug. 31. The board is being asked to approve as action items: revision to local board policies regarding student discipline; a resolution for the district to enter into partnership agreements with Chapter 41 school district; and a resolution “explaining intent to exceed or fall short of proposed expenditure targets established by the Commissioner of Education” which will be presented along with budget.

Trustees are being asked tonight to approve a  $1.4054 ad valorem tax per $100 cash valuation on all real property, personal property and mix property located and situated within the confines and boundaries of SSISD as of Jan. 1 of this year.

Broken down that rate would provide $1.04 per $100 property value for the local maintenance fund, which is the general operating fund which school districts use for daily operations, including salaries and supplies. The remaining $0.3654 rate goes into the interest and sinking fund which is used for debt service and bonded indebtedness.

According to the expenditures data available on the school website (www.ssisd.net), the 2008-2009 budget was for $29.77 million, and this year’s budgets is expected to be $33.7 million.
