Oak Avenue shut down temporarily for work on railroad tracks; construction expected to continue Wednesday

Motorists headed for downtown on Oak Avenue for their daily commute Tuesday weren’t the only ones surprised to find the street shut down at the railroad tracks.

In fact, city, police and fire officials were just as shocked as anyone to find traffic being diverted off of Oak Avenue to points east and west.

City leaders said no one in the municipal government’s directory was contacted about the decision to start a construction project on Oak Avenue at the railroad crossing.

One city official said it would have been nice to have some advance notice about the closure to prepare for the detours.

It was not clear what work was being done, although a backhoe seemed to be digging up a section of asphalt at the railroad crossing.

A call made this morning to a representative of Kansas City Southern Railways was not returned.

It was also unclear exactly how long Oak Avenue would stay closed down, although word on the street was that the repairs should be completed on Wednesday morning — but don’t be surprised if it’s in the afternoon.
