Plane vs. Pelican: Guess who won? Trip to Idaho interrupted by fowl flight plan

When she booked a flight to Hailey, Idaho, Diane Morris had no idea her journey would be interrupted by a pelican.

Morris, who has worked as a nurse practitioner at Suphur Springs Medical-Surgical Clinic since 2000, was going on vacation to visit her college roommate.

On Friday, July 31, Morris left D/FW airport on a Delta Airlines flight for the first leg of her trip.

“I flew from D/FW to Salt Lake City,” she explained. “Then I had to get on a smaller, commuter-type plane with propellers to fly into the airport at Hailey, Idaho.”

The flight to Hailey had been in the air for about 10-15 minutes when  crew members came out of the cockpit and said, “We’ve hit a bird. We’re going to have to go back to Salt Lake City.”

“I didn’t feel a thing,” Morris said. “The plane didn’t wobble. We couldn’t tell.”

As the passengers deplaned on the Salt Lake City tarmac, they noticed that everyone was staring at the nose of their plane.

“It was pretty shocking,” Morris said. “There was a crushed pelican in the nose cone.”

It took an hour before the passengers got on another plane and headed to Hailey.

“It was an uneventful trip,” Morris said. “I was very glad.”
