Police and rangers, assisted by a tactical unit, arrested a Kingsville man at his apartment Monday for the November robbery of the Main Street E-Z Mart with a shotgun.

Quintis Lavance Weatherall, 21, of Kingsville, formerly of Commerce, was slated to be arraigned Tuesday morning for the aggravated robbery.

“We are glad to get this case solved, especially due to the nature of the robbery. There are no other suspects at this time. We are glad he has been arrested and is in custody,” said Sulphur Springs Police Det. Sgt. David Gilmore.

Police had investigated the Nov. 16 robbery of an E-Z Mart store by a shotgun toting masked man. A man wearing a black ski mask reportedly entered the store at about 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, with a shotgun and demanded the clerk empty the register. The man then demanded money from the safe, and demanded the clerk hand over her money and wallet. The man collected the cash and fled toward the car wash next to the Main Street convenience store. No one was hurt in the robbery, officers noted in reports following the incident.

They had followed leads at the time but were unable to track the man down. The case had continued to be open but with no new leads until recently. The leads pointed to Weatherall as a suspect in the robbery.

Weatherall, who “had been going back and forth between Commerce and Sulphur Springs at the time” of the robbery, was reported to have moved with his girlfriend to Kingsville in recent months.

Gilmore and Texas Ranger John Vance flew to Kingsville. They obtained sufficient evidence to secure a warrant for Weatherall’s arrest. They contacted Kingsville’s police chief who, familiar with Weatherall from a past burglary case, sent one of its tactical units to assist the officers in serving the Kleberg arrest warrant. Gilmore, Vance, a County Ranger and KPD tactical unit arrested Weatherall at his apartment. When arrested, Weatherall was in possession of marijuana, resulting in additional charges, according to Gilmore.

The man is thought at this point to have acted alone in the Main Street robbery.
