People showed their love for the Main Street Farmers’ Market in Sulphur Springs this weekend, casting enough votes to push the venue into the top 100 in a nationwide online contest.

As of 9 a.m. today, the Sulphur Springs market sits at 97th in the nation with 113 votes, only one behind the Ocean Beach Farmers Market in San Diego, in the “Love Your Farmers Market” contest. The market receiving the most votes in the contest will receive $5,000, with other prizes to runners-up.
LocalHarvest and Care2, two websites devoted to the local food movement, are co-sponsoring the contest.
People age 18 or over with Internet access can vote in the contest, which began June 19 and ends Sept. 17, by visiting www.care2.com/farmersmarket and clicking on “Find Your Market.”
Hundreds of farmers markets across the U.S. are included in the vote listings, including 109 in the Lone Star State.
The votes also pushed Sulphur Springs to number seven in Texas, only 12 behind No. 6 Midland Downtown Farmers Market and 18 votes behind No. 5 Austin Farmers’ Market’s 130 votes.
At the end of the day Thursday, the Main Street market was eighth in the state with 86 votes, but 27 votes since then pushed the local venue into seventh in Texas as well as No. 97 in the United States.
