Three Sulphur Springs High School cheerleading squads recently came home with a total of seven awards, earned national bids and had 12 members named to the All-American Team during the National Cheer Association Summer Camp. One girl took top honors for being the highest scoring All-American Team member at camp.

The school took a composite 29 cheerleaders representing all three squads to the NCA summer camp. All three squads did well, with varsity earning three awards and the junior varsity and freshman teams earning two awards each. All three groups earned bids to compete in the NCA Senior and Junior High National Championship in Dallas as well as an invitation to attend the NCA special event later this year. Bids to nationals are awarded to squads which exemplify the best technical skill and cheerleading technique, according to SSHS Cheer Coach Missy Caddell.

“This is such a talented and competitive team. Each squad is preparing for the upcoming athletic year and their competition season. Be sure and come out and help our cheerleaders on our reining state champion Wildcats,” invites Caddell.

The SSHS Varsity Cheerleaders earned the NCA Motion Award for “superlative motions during evaluations,” the Technical Excellence Award for “superior skills in stunting” and the Stunt Smart Award for “their excellent skills in spotting and stunt technique.”

The SSHS Junior Varsity Cheerleaders also are awarded the Stunt Smart Award for spotting and stunt technique as well as the Motion Award for “displaying sharp and definite motion.”

The SSHS Freshman Cheerleaders also was awarded the Motion Award as well as the Herkie Team Award for exemplifying leadership, values and teamwork – the very qualities NCA is built on.

The 12 students named to the All-American Team, the most prestigious award in cheerleading, are eligible to perform at various NCA special events. Each was judged on motion technique, jumps, tumbling, spirit and enthusiasm, voice projection and overall crowd appeal. SSHS students named to the All-American team included freshman squad members Ally Eddins, LaBrandis Adams, Jena Garrison and Emily Brackhahn; junior varsity squad members Skyler Sinclair, Tristyn Rutledge and Ayana Taylor; and varsity squad members Lindsay Ramey, Spencer Martin, Mia Taylor, Kristin Ramsey and Tashia Raye.

Lindsay Ramey was also awarded the NCA Top All-American Award for being the highest scoring All-American Team member at camp. This award will enable her to try out to be part of the NCA cheerleading staff.
