Individuals interested in obtaining Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory training will want to make note of an upcoming class offered at Texas A&M University.

“SASSI Training” is designed to give professionals the tools they need to utilize SASSI, or substance abuse subtle screening inventory.

SASSI is a brief and easily administered psychological screening measure to help identify adult and adolescents who may have substance use disorders, as well as information about treatment planning.

The inventory is based on 20 years worth of research and development and is said to have  93 percent accuracy rate for adults and 94 percent accuracy for adolescents. It includes subtle questions that have no apparent connection to substance use, allowing identification of individuals with alcohol and other drug problems even if the individuals don’t themselves acknowledge the problem.

The class is targeted toward individuals who screen for alcohol and drug related disorders, including substance abuse counselors, educators, medical practitioners, criminal justice professionals, drug court personnel, employee assistance counselors and mental providers.

No prior experience with SASSI is required to attend the class, which will be held Thursday, Nov. 5, in the Leadership Room at TAMU-Metroplex Center, 2600 Motley Dr. in Mesquite. The class will last from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and costs $100. Space is limited to the first 50 who register.

Refunds for cancelations can only be made if notification of the cancelation is made by Oct. 13. No partial credit will be awarded for partial attendance, nor will refunds be offered for partial attendance.

Registration (participant’s printed name, address, email address and phone number) should be mailed to Texas A&M Metroplex Center, Attn: Dr. Lavelle Hendricks, 2600 Motley Drive, Mesquite, TX 75150. The check or money order should be made payable to First Service Alcohol and Drug Education Program.

The class is offered by First Service Alcohol and Drug Education Program in conjunction with Texas A&M-Commerce Department of Counseling. Sandra B. Chestnut, certified SASSI and A&S trainer, will be the instructor.
