E-mail Print PDF

One day each year people nationwide take time out to celebrate that Old West spirit which lingers in the American cowboy. This weekend, Hopkins County Regional Civic Center will be abuzz with activities designed to showcase this hard-working breed of rider.

The National Day of the American Cowboy will be observed in Hopkins County on Saturday, July 18, from 7 a.m. to noon with a real chuckwagon breakfast, complete with free cowboy coffee as well as “Old West shootouts.”

From 10 a.m. to noon, those attending will have the opportunity to enjoy an Outdoor Western Swing concert and various entertainment. Featured will be Buddy Stephens All-Star Band, Joe Green, Shelby McMillan, Gale Hague and Stuart Richey. Texas Pistolaros will also be on hand in “Old West” period costumes doing enactments and giving a good showing of the true cowboy heritage.

The day’s fun continues with an indoor dance at 7 p.m. Saturday at the VFW.

Also being held in conjunction with National Day of the American Cowboy will be Friday clinics and Saturday competitions by the American Stock Horse Association and Stock Horse of Texas Association (or SHOT as it’s often referred to). The program is being sponsored by Hopkins County 4-H horsemanship programs, specifically the Hopkins County  Equine Action Team known as HEAT. All funds from the clinic and competition will benefit local 4-H projects. For more information on the clinic and show, as well as registration information, visit www.stockhorsetexas.org.

The HEAT 4-H club is also sponsoring a custom saddle raffle. Tickets are $5 each for a chance to win a custom-built saddle — either a barrel saddle, roping saddle, ranch saddle or cutting saddle — with a base value of $900 made by Sulphur River Saddlery in Hagansport. The drawing will be at “high noon” Saturday during the SHOT event in the arena. Proceeds will support Hopkins County 4-H horse programs.
