Each year Sulphur Springs Fire Department designates three days to help raise funds for individuals, particularly children, affected by muscular dystrophy.

Generally, on Labor Day weekend the city firemen stand at the corners around the courthouse and the Bill Bradford Road-Gilmer Street stop light with boots in hand to collect whatever funds community members can spare to help the Muscular Dystrophy Association aide those families affected by the ailment. The community is always so generous that the donations usually generate notice on the area firefighters honor roll for top collections.

This year, SSFD will get a jump on Fill the Boot. Instead of just Thursday-Saturday of Labor Day weekend, the firemen will also be partnering with Brookshire’s two days this weekend in a cookout fundraiser.

Friday and Saturday, July 3-4, look for SSFD at Brookshire’s parking lot from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. serving up hot dogs and hamburgers. Brookshire’s is providing the burgers and dogs, so cost is by donation only, with no set fee — give what you can and enjoy a grilled lunch, the perfect compliment for the Independence Day holiday. And you don’t even have to stand over the hot grill to do it!

Proceeds from the cookout will go toward SSFD’s contribution to the Sept. 3-5 MDA Fill the Boot campaign.
