Music on Main Street, a program designed to bring entertainers to the downtown area, kicks off a two-day Independence Celebration tonight at 7:30.

Local performer Stan Narramore will open the free show, with Edgar and Mark Anthony Cruz, acoustic guitarists, serving as the headliners.

“It’s our goal to feature local entertainers along with the main performers,” said Joey Baker, who serves double-duty as airport manager and the director of tourism for the city of Sulphur Springs. “I’m glad we were able to get the Cruz Brothers here and I’m happy to have Stan on the bill, too.”

According to Edgar Cruz, the two brothers rarely share the same bill.

“We only get together three or four times a year,” he said in a phone interview. “He lives in Austin and I live in Oklahoma City. When we do play, it’s so much fun.”

Narramore, who first picked up a guitar in 1964,  is a familiar face to local music fans, having played gigs in the area for the past six years. He plays 1970s rock, blues and folk music, and has been working on a new song or two for tonight’s performance.

Main Street will be blocked off, according to Baker, and there are plans to have vendors.

The temperature at 7:30 last night was 95. The afternoon heat index for the area is expected to be 105, so bring your lawn chair, an umbrella to protect you from the heat and remember to drink extra water to stay hydrated.

The annual Independence Celebration continues Saturday at 7:45 p.m. with a free concert, sponsored by Alliance Bank, featuring a number of patriotic tunes performed by the Northeast Texas Symphony Orchestra. A  fireworks display, sponsored by Sulphur Springs Vision Center and DeHaven Eye Clinc, will begin at dusk.
