The 24-year-old Yantis man accused in the hit-and-run death of Nathan Paul Spataro of Sulphur Springs was released from jail on felony charges after posting bond Friday.
James Blake Spinks, 24, of Yantis was released from jail Friday afternoon after securing $100,000 bond each on a second-degree felony charge of intoxicated manslaughter with a vehicle and a felony charge of failure to stop and render aid at an accident involving a death, according to jail reports.
Police, firefighters and paramedics were called at 3 a.m. Friday to a hit-and-run accident involving a pedestrian and a car. When officials arrived in the 1400 block of East Industrial Drive, they found the victim was dead. Nathan Paul Spataro, 21, was pronounced dead by Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Ronny Glossup, who ordered an autopsy as is standard procedures in fatality crashes.
While the investigation into the incident is still under investigation by Sulphur Springs Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety and a Texas Ranger, officials said preliminary investigation pointed to Spinks as the suspect driving the car which struck Spataro.
Spinks was located in a nearby parking lot. The Yantis man reportedly said “he did not see that guy walking down the road,” police noted on arrest reports.
After observing indicators of intoxication, Spinks was subjected to field sobriety tests, which he failed. Spinks was taken into custody by SSPD officers Lonnie Taylor and Gina Gainer at 3:27 a.m. at 1495 East Industrial Drive. Spinks’ vehicle, a green Honda Civic, was impounded. He was taken to Hopkins County Memorial Hospital, where a blood specimen was drawn for evaluation. Spinks was then taken to the county jail.
