A Sulphur Springs woman was jailed early Saturday morning for leaving her four children home alone for more than an hour while she went out of town with a friend.

Police were first contacted after receiving complaints of elementary-aged children outside a Helm Lane apartment “generally being loud” at 2:30 Saturday morning.

When they arrived, officers did indeed find a pair of 8-year-olds sitting in chairs outside their apartment. After a brief investigation, they learned that four children were home alone at the apartment, and the 8-year-old noise-makers were the older children at the apartment. Their two younger siblings, a 4-year-old and a 12-month-old, were still inside, where their mother, 26-year-old Julie Anna Brzeski, reportedly left them while she went “out with a friend,” arrest reports state.

Officers were able to make phone contact with the mother, who told them she was “just outside of town” and on her way back home. About an hour later, after several other family members had arrived to sit with the children, Brzeski finally arrived home. She was taken into custody at 3:44 a.m. Saturday by officer Gina Gainer and Sgt. William Mayeux for child abandonment. She remained in the county jail later Saturday morning on the charge, according to police and jail reports.

At her request, police released Brzeski’s four young children into the care of her stepfather.
