Hot weather and cold ice cream were a cool combination Saturday during the 2009 Texas State Champion Homemade Ice Cream Freeze Off on the Hopkins County Regional Civic Center grounds, where local Carlie Penson scooped the competition with her Almond Praline-flavored super scoop entry.
More than 65 entries in categories of plain, fruit and novelty were served to more than 700 residents who weathered soaring temperatures that reached the mid to upper 90s.
In the Little Dip category for children six to 12 years of age Mandy Eckhart placed first in novelty with her turtle cheesecake ice cream with Norris English following in a close second place finish with his big red strawberry concoction.
Little Dip fruit category winners were Ryder and Addison Caddell, first, and Tori Dorner second, both with peach flavored entries.
In the Little Dip plain category Lucy Walters placed first with good ole’ vanilla and Ann Marie Dorner placing second with chocolate.
Big Dip winners in the plain category were first place Carlie Penson, and second place Chris Allen, both with chocolate. Tori Cotton took third with vanilla.
Strawberry ice cream was the flavor of choice in the Big Dip fruit category with Tonya Ross placing first, Ryan Henton second and Vickie Pickle third.
Henry Penson was named the first place recipient in the Novelty Category with his pecan pie ice cream, while Jimmy Don Allen took both second and third place with caramel pecan and butter pecan, respectively.
The People’s Choice was awarded to Tami Armstrong for her pomegranate flavored concoction.
The Super Scoop runner-up was Billy Jack Allen with Banana Nut.
