Veterans of the United States armed forces and their dependents and survivors received almost $10 million in federal benefits in fiscal year 2008.
Hopkins County Veterans Service Officer Capt. Joe Reid Scott issued a news release today announce the U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs paid $9.643 million to Hopkins County veterans, dependents and survivors during the last federal fiscal year.
These expenditures range from compensation and pensions to paying for education, medical care and vocational rehabilitation. The figures reflect the dollar values of actual payments made to individuals in Hopkins County.
Most of the monetary benefits paid are placed in immediate circulation, providing a significant economic stimulus to the Hopkins County economy.
According to Scott, the information provides “an excellent barometer of the valuable service performed for Hopkins County veterans” by the local veterans service office.
