Wildcat UIL team advances to state; 3rd overall at region

The Sulphur Springs High School team was ranked third out of 30 school competing in the regional University Interscholastic League meet this weekend. Overall, the SSHS UIL Academic Team racked up 96 points at the contest, held at the University of North Texas in Denton over the weekend.

Overall, the school had three teams recognized and eight students recognized for their individual accomplishments.
The first place spelling and vocabulary team consisted of Zach Mahand, Sarah Fox, Lyndsi Bible and Kelsey Brown. Individually, Fox earned second place honors and Mahand placed third in spelling and vocabulary.
The first-ranked current events team included Cole Cable, Taylor Moore, Rosalynn Karstens and Victor Gonzalez. Individually, Cable was recognized for his fourth-place finish in current events.
The second-ranked accounting team included Ryan Clark, Jace Orren, Miguel Sanchez and Ayanna Smith. Orren was also recognized for his sixth place individual finish in accounting.
Two students were recognized for their performances in the school’s “Alice in Wonderland”-themed One-Act Play presentation. Brittney Woolley was named to the All-Star Cast and Cole Cable was named honorable mention All-Star Cast.
Courtne Anderson was honored for her second place win in computer applications, and Katy Mason for placing third in headline writing.
All students earning first through third place individual honors and first-ranked teams at the regional academic UIL meet earned the right to compete at the state UIL contest. The second-ranked accounting team is also waiting to see if they will be picked up as wild card team, which will enable them to compete at the state meet as well, according to SSHS UIL coordinator Gina Wilder.
