Relay for Life gearing up for big weekend

Relay For Life of Hopkins County Committee and team members will be busy this week finishing up last minute details to ensure the 2009 fund-raising event goes off without a hitch Friday night.

In that light, the RFL Committee would like to remind the community that April 30 is the deadline to submit a photo to be included in the slide presentation during the weekend event. Photos may be submitted either at the Wal-Mart fitting room, First United Methodist Church office or e-mailed to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Photos will be returned, but those submitting them are asked to put the picture in a self-addressed envelope to help the Relay Committee return them. Also, include the name of person photographed, and whether the person is living or deceased.

The RFL Luminant Mining Team also noted they will be offering chances for four prize packages to be drawn at the conclusion of the relay Saturday, May 2.

The team is offering chances for $2 each or three for $5 for a handmade wood and slate coffee table valued at $495. Raffle tickets are available at the First United Methodist Church office for $2 each or three for $5. The table was built and donated by George Mayfield, in memory of Linda Funderburk Mayfield.

Luminant Mining Team is offering chances for $3 each or five chances for $12 for a $55 championship horseshoe set, donated by Tractor Supply Co. The set comes with a professional carrying case. Tickets are available by contacting Tammie at 580-464-6193.

The third raffle being conducted by Luminant Min ing Team is for a $100 table-top charcoal smoker-grill and two bags of mesquite chips for smoking. Tickets for this raffle are also available for $5 each or five for $15 by contacting Tammie at 580-464-6193.

The fourth package to be raffled by the Luminant group is a Beavers Bend vacation for two, slated June 19-20. The vacation includes a one bedroom cabin with all amenities, hot tub, grill with propane, free boat parking and free admission for two to the Beavers Bend Museum of Wildlife. The trip falls during the Ouachita Festival of the Forest. Tickets are available for $5 each or five for $20 by calling Tammie.

Relay For Life is a fun-filled, overnight event for the American Cancer Society that mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate survivors, remember loved ones and raise money for the fight against cancer.

Survivors and current cancer patients, their families, businesses, civic organizations and the public are invited to form teams to take part in this exciting team event. Relay For Life takes place from 7 p.m. Friday, May 1 until 7 a.m. Saturday, May 2 on the Sulphur Springs Middle School Track.

More information about specific events and other fundraisers to be held during RFL May 1-2 should be available later this week.
