Several teams have scheduled events to help raise funds for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, and a special race is also slated this month.
Currently, the Galyean Insurance Agency and Alliance Bank teams are offering chances to win an Easter Basket, which includes a $50 savings bond along with the usual Easter goodies. Chances are $1 each or six chances for $5. Contact one of the businesses to purhcase tickets. The drawing for the basket will be Thursday, April 9.
Also on Thursday, April 9, the Galyean Insurance team will be hosting a bake sale from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in front of the Alliance Bank location on the downtown square.
On Monday, the Luminant Mining team will be hosting Dinner for Donations at Miller Grove Farm Supply/NETex Ag.
On Friday, April 10, the 911 Star of Life RFL team will be holding a bake sale from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., or until all goodies are sold, at Wal-Mart.
Also on Friday, the Pitts Family & Friends RFL Team will be having a garage sale and bake sale beginning at 8 a.m. at Phyllis Court. Cancer survivors who have not yet registered for the May 1-2 RFL may do so at this fundraiser.
The Alliance Bank and Galyean Insurance teams will also be holding two fund raising events on April 17. The Alliance Bank team will be hosting Burger Between the Buildings and a Bake Sale, while the Galyean group will be taping cancer survivor Margaret Stahl to the wall at Alliance Bank from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tape will be sold by the yard for $1 or 6 yards for $5, a roll of 20 yards for $15 and a 50-yard roll for $40, at Galyean Insurance Agency. For a donation of $5, leave an email address and have a photo emailed, and for $10 get a picture emailed and write a message on the tape.
On April 18, the Aguilar Family RFL team will host its annual Mexican dinner to raise funds for RFL. Generally, for a set fee individuals can partake of a traditional tamale dinner. Food can be either eaten at First United Methodist Church where its’ served or taken out in carry out containers upon request.
RFL Team Wal-Mart is also sponsoring “Glass with Class.” They are selling personalized cake pans, casserole dishes, bowls and other items to benefit RFL. For more information about the products, visit www.gwccakepans.com online. To place an order, contact Andi at Wal-Mart.
The annual American Cancer Society Hopkins County Relay For Life Outrun Cancer Mile, 5K and 10K Run will also be hosted Saturday, April 25, at Coleman Park. The 1-mile race will begin at 8 a.m., the 5 kilometer run at 8:30 a.m. and the 10 kilometer run at 9 a.m.
The first 50 people to sign up for the Outrun Cancer will receive a t-shirt. The race will be divided into the following classifications: grades 1-3, 4-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12; and ages 19-29, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and the masters division for ages 60 and older.
The top three finishers in each class in the 5K and 10K runs will receive awards. Ribbons will be awarded to all finishers in the mile run. Four-person teams may also enter the 5K and 10K run, with a team trophy awarded to the winning team.
