What started as a burglary report to police ultimately ended with a man going to jail for driving drunk with a 1-year-old in the car, and police filing a report on the mother for endangering the child.
A Jarbo Street resident contacted police Sunday, stating his child’s mother and her boyfriend barged into his house around 2:30 a.m., and the woman took their 1-year-old while her boyfriend appeared threatening and barred him from getting at the pair.
The complainant, suspecting the boyfriend was drunk, expressed concern for his child’s safety as the other man was driving the car his child was taken away in.
At about 3:35 a.m. sheriff’s deputies stopped the car the trio had left in at the 129 mile marker on Interstate 30 east for a minor traffic violation. Inside the car, Cpl. Amanda Lovett found the child, her mother, the mother’s boyfriend who was driving, the woman who takes care of the child while the mother works 12-hour shifts and the sitter’s fiancé.
The driver, a 32-year-old Mount Pleasant man, was arrested for driving while intoxicated with a child passenger in the vehicle, a felony offense. Lovett, in arrest reports, noted the man fumbled in his wallet when retrieving requested identification, had slurred speech and alcohol was also detected on him. He admitted to drinking earlier in the evening, and noted he had previously been convicted for a DWI offense. He failed sobriety tests and was taken into custody for drunk driving with a child passenger, according to arrest reports.
One of the passengers in the car, the sitter’s fiancé, was identified as a registered sex offender. The sitter told officers during questioning that her fiancé is not around the child when she watches it. Another person contacted said they’d warned the child’s mother not to let the child be around a registered sex offender, according to police reports.
The sitter also indicated to officers that the reason they went to get the child in the middle of the night was because the baby’s mother found out the child’s father was seeing a girl she alleged is a drug user and stripper, and she didn’t want her child around the woman, according to police reports.
When asked why she allowed her child in a car with an intoxicated driver, the mother indicated to officers that while she knew the driver had been drinking, she didn’t believe him to be intoxicated.
Child Protective Services were contacted regarding the matter. They indicated the child should be returned to the father pending further investigation. Officers on several attempts tried to get the woman to relinquish the child to the father, but she refused. She surrendered the child only after they warned her that failure to do so would result in her being charged with interference with public duties.
While officers didn’t charge the woman with that offense, police did file an offense report against her for endangering her child by allowing the baby to be in the car driven by someone who’d been drinking and in the company of a registered sex offender, but did not at that time arrest the woman, according to reports. Police also made an offense report for burglary with intent to commit another offense, assault, for the incident which occurred on Jarbo Street.
The Mount Pleasant man was released from jail later Sunday after posting $5,000 bond on the DWI with a child passenger charge, according to jail reports.
