Friends raising money for victim of Monday morning fire

Friends of one of the men whose home was destroyed by fire Monday morning are collecting donations to help him get back on his feet.

Donations may be made in designated containers at Alliance Bank and Northline Grocery to benefit John Shaw. He and five other residents fled their North Jackson Street residence Monday morning after a fire broke out.

The American Red Cross was able to assist the six men by providing some prepaid credit cards and helping with a few days’ worth of accommodations at Best Western.

Shaw, a 12-year employee of Morningstar Foods, used his portion of the vouchers to purchase clothing. He will be staying with friends until he is able to save and collect enough money to afford the cost of renting and furnishing another residence.

“I appreciate all the help I can get. Every little bit helps,” Shaw said late  Monday afternoon.

Donations are being accepted in the collection containers, or contact Shaw via Janet Loyd at 903-885-1502 to find out about other needs or donating other items.
