‘Jeans’ drive extended another week

The deadline to make a donation to Teens for Jeans has been extended for another week by DoSomething.org and Aeropostale. Locally, people have until Feb. 22 to donate jeans in designated containers at local locations to the help homeless teens, Sulphur Springs event coordinator Emma Boyett noted.

After last year’s huge success, more than 1,600 pairs of jeans (so many Aeropostale had to distribute them to two different homeless shelters), Boyett set this year’s goal at 2,500 pairs of jeans, but ultimately just wants to be able to help as many teens in homeless shelters feel a little more normal by outfitting them with jeans.
In the last week, about 300 pairs of jeans have been donated to the drive, bringing the local tally so far to 450.
This year, all campuses in Sulphur Springs Independent School District, including Sulphur Springs High School where Boyett is a freshman, are participating by hosting collection containers to allow students, staff and community members to donate.
Some local businesses and offices again helping out by acting as collection sites include Echo Publishing, Tractor Supply, Sulphur Springs Public Library, Guaranty Bond Bank and the Chamber of Commerce.
Last year, Boyett’s church in Garland helped out, collecting jeans for the drive. This year, a Rockwall business is contributing to the effort, too.
“The new bakery coming to the square turns out to be a friend from my high school days in the metroplex,” Boyett said. “She is super excited about opening her second bakery. In honor of her coming to Sulphur Springs, she is collecting jeans at her bakery in Rockwall. What a great way to blend the two together.”
They will be accepting donations from 10 a.m. until noon Saturday, Feb. 15, between Alliance Bank and City National Bank on the square. Donations of all colors, styles and sizes of denim jeans are appreciated.
