3 Southern Cross dedications for Brannan family

A Southern Cross dedication for three Confederate veterans will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, in the Snodgrass and Brannan Cemetery in Mount Vernon. 

Tributes will be given for Second Lt. Joseph Brannan, (father) 25th Reg. Infantry, Co. K; Pvt. Luther B. Brannan, (son) Capt. Sutton's Co., Texas Cavalry, Graham's Rangers; and Pvt. Jonathan Brannan, (son) Co. 1, 11th Cavalry. 

Charles Buchanan, No. 2531 UDC, Sulphur Springs, will have a special dedication marker in honor of the veterans. 

Sulphur Springs Confederate Camp, J. M. "Matt" Martin Camp No. 441, and a member of the Walter P. Lane Camp No. 1455 of Longview will be helping. Honor Guard 1st Sgt. Paul Hamilton will be commanding. Archie Hass, Native American (name "Otter") Color Guard, will represent the Cherokee Nations in music and in dress in honor of these soldiers. Also helping will be Upshur County Patriots of Gilmer, Sam Mercer, 5th Brigadier Commander, Red Diamond Camp of Texarkana, and other camps.

Joe Skipper, the great-great-grandson of Joseph Brannan, who is from Daingerfield, will read all three of the biographies. Joyce Fountain, the great-great-great-granddaughter of Joseph Brannan, who is from Gilmer, will unvail all three monuments. 

The UDC of Sulphur Springs will place a wreath to honor these veterans. Also, the Order of Confederate Rose ladies will also assist in the dedication.

A private luncheon for the re-enactors will be served in the Cypress Springs Baptist Church that is pastored by Gary Gage. Jim and Donna Baber will cater the luncheon. The public is invited and cameras are allowed.

Directions to the Snodgrass Cemetery: From Mount Vernon on the south side of Interstate 30, take Highway 37 south to Pearly community, turn left (east) on FM 900. Turn south on FM 3350 and continue several miles. (Road will curve quite frequently.) The distance from Mount Vernon is 11 miles. Watch for a sign or flag displayed for cemetery location.
