Sulphur Springs Independent School District Monday will launch its new parent and student time-sensitive notification system, Blackboard Connect, which includes a smart phone application that can be used to stay connected to district happenings.

“The Blackboard Connect service will be used for timely district-wide notifications regarding school events, closings or delays and will complement our emergency preparedness procedures,” SSISD Director of Human Resources and Communications Rusty Harden said in a press release.
This will enable the district to notify all registered individuals in a matter of a few minutes should any inclement weather situations develop, such as the tornadoes of spring 2012 and progressively worsening icy conditions of fall 2013, or situations such as the gas leak which for two days this winter which impacted heating at Sulphur Springs Elementary School; students were recommended to wear warmer clothing and jackets to class until the problem was resolved.
The alert system will contact the numbers and emails for each student. Those who have a number or email contact information on file but do not wish to be alerted via those means can change their preferences on the parent portal on www.ssisd.net, the school website.
To register for Blackboard Connect, parents may click the menu on the left side of the district home page, then follow the options. Parents will need to know their students’ ID number, which can be found by logging into the Skyward parent portal.
Once preferences are set, Smartphone users can download the Blackboard Connect “MyConnect” application to their Android or iPhone.
The district will test the system next week.
“On Monday, Feb. 3, if we have a mobile number on file for you, you will receive a confirmation text from either 23177 or 63079.  Please save this number and program it as ‘SSISD Connect’ so you can quickly recognize this number as the official source of our messages.  If you do not wish to receive texts, the confirmation message will include instructions on how to opt-out,” Harden notes. “As part of the testing, you will also receive phone calls and email alerts. The system contacts work, home and personal phone numbers. You can go to the parent portal to take control of your notification preferences.”
Harden said if any parents receive calls they don’t want to receive, parents should try the Blackboard Connect link on www.ssisd.net and establish preferences. For any other questions related to Blackboard Connect, contact Harden at 903-885-2153.
