A Sulphur Springs Police sergeant was arraigned before Justice of the Peace Yvonne King Thursday morning on a misdemeanor grand jury indictment alleging assault family violence causing bodily injury. Bond was set for the officer at $5,000.
The 37-year-old officer, a 10-year veteran of Sulphur Springs Police Department, had been on administrative leave since Dec. 24, 2013, when the family violence was reported.
Police Chief Jim Bayuk said information regarding the incident was turned over to Texas Rangers for investigation and the results handed to County Attorney Dusty Rabe.
An indictment was returned earlier this week on the Class C misdemeanor offense. As keeping with the policy of the News-Telegram, people charged with a misdemeanor crime are not identified by the newspaper.
The alleged incident did not occur when the officer was on duty.
The officer met with Bayuk on Wednesday and resigned from the police department.
He surrendered himself to sheriff's officers at the county jail this morning and was released after posting $5,000 bond.
