Two men have been arrested on second-degree felony arson charges in connection with the torching of a Sulphur Springs school bus Sunday night.
Kyle Michael Case, 24, was arraigned before Justice of the Peace Yvonne King on two arson charges Wednesday morning. King set bond at $50,000 on each charge.
Bond for Francisco Manuel Velasco, 20, was set at $50,000 on a single arson charge.
Both men were being held in Hopkins County jail following arraignment.
The pair was arrested in connection with the burning of bus No. 37, a 1990 Blue Bird bus parked inside the fenced compound at the Sulphur Springs Independent School District’s bus barn on Van Sickle Street.
Fire investigator David James said the pair was able to get inside the locked compound and get flammable accelerant inside the bus.
SSISD Assistant Superintendent Randy Reed said the interior of the bus, built of aluminum and fire retardant materials, was totally gutted.
Neighbors who had noticed a suspicious vehicle in the area about 10 p.m. noticed the fire and called 911.
Firefighters were extinguishing a trash fire, within a block of the bus compound, when the call came in. The bus was totally engulfed when they arrived.
Investigators said the two men gave no indication as to why any of the fires, including the bus, were started.
The bus was not used daily but used as in the event a new school bus became disabled.
